Tutorials, Tools & Inspiration

Binding Basics

I've been fussing in the studio wanting to create some video tutorials, and at 2 am one morning,  it occurred to me that I don't have to reinvent the wheel on this.  There are TONS of good tutorials on binding ideas and so, I'm going to share a few links to some of my favourites.

Favorite 2024 Tools

I'm working on a list of my favourite tools to help make your quilting journey more enjoyable. These links take you to MSQC but many are available at your local quilt shops or other online vendors.

  • Olfa 45mm Splash Rotary Cutter - I like the easy blade change as I go through a lot of blades.  Olfa makes other more ergonomic cutters as well but this is the one I find myself reaching for every single day
  • Creative Grids 2.5" wide ruler - at 15 inches long or more.  Mine is an Omnigrip however, I searched and can't find mine anywhere (it is ~20 years old).  I have a few other Creative Grids rulers and they are very nice.
  • 4.5" Bloc Loc Square Up Ruler - This is a new tool for me but I already find it invaluable.  They do come in different sizes but if you want to take your block-making to the next level - squaring them up is a huge game changer and this tool makes it very easy.
  • Quilting Stiletto (and seam ripper)  - I never knew I needed a stiletto until I started machine-binding a lot of quilts.  For a while I used the end of my seam ripper (not a great idea) but eventually got a stiletto in one of my tool kits.  I keep it ON the sewing machine next to my trimming scissors and it is useful for making those tiny adjustments my fingers are unable to do.  This one is quite beautiful as well as useful.
  • Round rotating mat by Omnigrid - Sort of luxury item and I didn't have one for years but I do love it.  It is great for those cuts when you are making multiple half square triangles or squaring up your blocks.
